Ants

There's nothing like the face of a kid who has just seen a "giant ant." To a youngster, these large, fast-moving creatures are fascinating - but to a homeowner, they represent a real threat. Carpenter Ants thrive in wood and can quickly do a great deal of expensive damage by hollowing out the beams that support your home. These giant ants are most active at night and are difficult to spot because they live mainly inside walls.

Because they look very similar and do equally serious damage, Carpenter Ants are often confused with Termites. Knowing the difference is very important to provide effective treatment. Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are elusive and usually nocturnal. They often lodge in dark crevices, and the tiny adhesive eggs can be nestled by the hundreds in fabric seams. Aside from bite symptoms, signs include fecal spots, blood smears on sheets and the presence of their empty moulted exoskeletons.

Bed bugs can also be detected by their characteristic smell of rotting raspberries. Yuck!

Bees & Wasps

Bzzzzzzzz...Hear that? That's the sound of a peaceful, quiet day in the yard being ruined by these persistent and dangerous pests.

Frankly, when humans come in contact with bees and wasps outside the home, we're trespassing on their turf. However, when nests are found within a dangerous distance of the house - or even inside the house - it's time to think about protecting your family and your pets from the potential hazards of wasp and bee stings.

But, before you reach for the bug spray and grab that long broomstick in the garage, be aware that an attack by an angry swarm of these buzzers can be brutally painful and, if you're allergic to their sting, even deadly. That's why homeowners all over Long Island leave this job to the professionals at Argonaut Pest Control.

Argonaut has the proper equipment and protective clothing to remove wasp, hornet, and bees nests safely and quickly - and to eliminate their inhabitants before they can cause physical harm to the humans or animals in your home.

Fleas

Is your pet bringing in unwanted guests? Fleas are one of these pests that be real itch in your side.

Fleas are wingless insects (about 1/16-inch long) that are agile, usually dark colored, with tube-like mouth-parts adapted to feeding on the blood of their hosts. Their legs are long, the hind pair well adapted for jumping. Actually, a flea can jump vertically up to 7 inches and horizontally up to 13 inches, making the flea one of the best jumpers of all known animals (relative to body size).

The tough body is able to withstand great pressure, likely an adaptation to survive attempts to eliminate them by mashing or scratching. Even hard squeezing between the fingers is normally insufficient to kill a flea.

Cockroaches

Sorry, but cockroaches, those elusive, seemingly indestructible little creatures that send shivers up the spine, have been around for some 400 million years and are not likely to go away anytime soon! In addition to spoiling the comfortable, relaxed atmosphere of your home - they have also been linked to severe respiratory allergies, including asthma.

Because cockroaches are generally nocturnal, you're not likely to see them during the day, so look for what they've left behind - oval, brown egg cases or feces that resemble large grains of pepper. At night, look for scattering adults as you turn on a light.

The best way to avoid a cockroach invasion is to keep counters, floors, and cabinets clean and all food stored tightly in containers. Also, check all grocery bags before bringing them inside, as cockroaches feed off the sweet glue in the seams.

Once your home or restaurant has been invaded, roaches will multiply quickly - often way too quickly for store-bought traps to be effective. To control the problem, call the pest control experts at Argonaut the minute you see the first signs of cockroach infestation.

Rodents

Do you hear the pitter-patter of little feet at night, even after the kids are asleep? Do you find small, black, seed-shaped objects or torn food packages in your cupboard? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you may be hosting unwelcomed visitors in your home!

As cooler weather approaches, rats and mice scout out warm, indoor nesting places and can enter your house, apartment, or place of business through an opening no larger than a dime. Once inside, they cause widespread contamination by shedding body hairs and scattering thousands of droppings throughout your building.

Ninety percent of rodent control is prevention - that is, rodent-proofing your property before these pests can enter. But once an infestation occurs, your best move to control the problem is to call in experienced professionals who can identify the species and immediately begin a treatment program.

Argonaut has provided safe, effective rodent control and rodent-proofing programs since 1960. Call now to find out how we can get your unwelcomed guests to "take the bait" and move out!

Termites

Right now, as you surf this web site, your home could be under siege by termites. Last year, termites caused more than $800 million worth of damage in over 600,000 homes - more damage than fires, storms, and earthquakes combined!

While the height of termite activity is in the spring, these devastatingly destructive pests are active all year round, silently damaging foundations and structural beams.

Common signs of termites include swarming, wing sheddings, mud tunnels on the foundation, and soft, crumbly wood. However, termites are often confused with Carpenter Ants, which are equally as destructive.
